Does Eating Healthy Mean Giving Up Taste?

Contrary to what you might believe, reorienting your relationship with food toward health does not mean sacrificing taste. Naturally, this is not what the food conglomerates want you to believe. They want you to believe that healthy food tastes like cardboard compared to what they're hawking.

 

If we all got up tomorrow and decided to get most of our calories from food (that is grown), they would be up a creek. The reason? Even with their state of the art labs and legions of food scientists, they haven't been able to figure out how to make apples or broccoli or brown rice. Consequently, they have to process the real food and turn it into something else: junk. Food is grown and junk is made.

Think about it. Food companies are in business to make money by selling us as much of the products as they can, not by keeping us healthy. They maximize profits by:

1.Keeping food costs low. To this they must drastically increase crop yields by:
a.Using fertilizers made from petrochemicals.
b.Spraying the heck out of the crops with poisonous pesticides.
2.Processing food and amplifying its flavor by adding lots of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, salt, and fat.
3.Brainwashing us into buying the nutrient bereft junk with advertising that stresses taste and low prices.

Unfortunately, advertisers and food companies have plied us with junk food, and we've grown accustomed to its overblown taste. Luckily, taste buds are creatures of habit-our most agreeable body parts. Given half a chance, they can be coaxed into loving almost anything! Even though they have become addicted to the overblown taste of junk, we can train them to love healthy food the same way we trained them to love the junk.

Here's how. First, your trade your junk food habit into a healthy food habit by buying healthy fresh produce, whole grains, and protein at the supermarket. Then, you commit yourself to getting into the habit of eating healthy food day after day. Habits are formed by repetition. Before long, healthy food tastes amazing, better than the junk ever did!

Healthy food has a fresh, wholesome, clean taste, and a feeling of satisfaction that junk can never deliver. The bottom line is: when you eat healthy, you are rewarded with a healthier, more energetic, younger looking and feeling, sexier body. And on top of it all (as if that weren't enough), you get the pleasure of great taste and the pride of knowing that you are treating your body well and doing your part to ensure its future health and well-being. Sacrifice? Who said anything about sacrifice?

Ask yourself, "What does my body need to eat to be healthy," rather than, "What does my body want to eat." We really can't communicate with our bodies that way. It's a nice idea, but for most people it doesn't work. Asking, "What does my body want to eat." is really asking, "What taste do I want to have in my mouth?" This kind of questioning moves us into the place of romanticizing food and into the child mind.

Asking "what does my body want to eat," is a slippery slope and leads to overweight.
